15 Types of Smart Home Device Categories

Here is a list of the 15 types of Smart Home Device categories. As you can see, most items already in your home can be replaced with a Smart Home device. These categories can be further grouped into 4 categories. These are smart home security, smart home convenience, smart home communications, and monitoring. For example, monitoring would include smart devices that work with appliances, hot water heaters, or flood detectors.

Out of the 15 types of smart home device categories is there any that are more important than others? It depends on your needs. If security is your top priority then video doorbells or cameras might top the list. If accessibility is paramount, then devices such as lights or automatic window treatments would be your go-to items.

So, this is how I have grouped the 15 types of smart home categories and their respective devices:

7. Smart Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Nest Protect, First Alert Onelink, Ring
